Courtside Tennis Club has been operating, since 1977,
as a full service tennis facility.

The club has 11 tennis courts, nine Har-Tru (fast dry) and two hard courts. Five of the Har-Tru courts are lighted for night play. There is a masonry practice wall on one of the hard courts. All of our courts have 10-foot high fence enclosures. The soft courts have windscreens and are attractively surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, which provide further protection from wind.

Courtside members gather
on our enclosed porch.

Courtside's Tennis Director, Jim Dempsey is a Venice native who started out hitting balls against the backboard at the Venice City courts and later played for the Venice High School Indians before graduating in 1974.

Later Jim attended what was then known as Manatee Junior College, where he played on their first tennis team before moving on to Florida Atlantic University, where he played and then coached.

After moving to the east coast and working as tennis director at Pembroke Lakes Racquet Club and the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club, Jim and his wife, Elsa finally moved back to the west coast of Florida in 1992. "We thought Venice would be a much better place to raise a family than Fort Lauderdale", explained Jim; he now has twin 11 year old daughters.

Jim took over as tennis director at Courtside Tennis Club early in 2007 after 7 years as tennis director at Palm Island Resort near Cape Haze. Under Jim's direction, Courtside's programs have multiplied and improved. His junior team was undefeated in the 2007 season and this season Courtside is fielding 3 USTA junior teams. He has also worked to develop evening programs for adults, to build more senior teams and plan for tournaments, inter club round robins and exhibition matches.

With Jim in charge Courtside has definitely become "the place for tennis in Venice".
